RE: Gustav ....and New Orleans ..?

They keep rebuilding Malibu after fire and floods, Why not N.O.? How many times has the (government) rebuilt Malibu? Lets face it, mostly the rich and their insurance money rebuilt what was burned in Malibu. Neither Fema nor the Red cross stepped in. At least not that I remember? :h I think there are a few people here who are comparing apples to oranges. A flood or fire in a some states, rarely happens in the same places over and over. Barb

RE: Gustav ....and New Orleans ..?

What if it FLOODS them again .... ?? I have a Bud in Slidell that says that most people in the area say it should be left as a large "lake". How about you ? The powers that be, say the levies are not in good shape and may not hold. I know that I certainly could never call any town located below sea level, home. What a sad thing that is happening, yet again, to those folks in New Orleans.. Barb

RE: Whacha readin' now?

Read: 'THE SUMMONS' -John Grisham 'THE STREET LAWYER' -John Grisham Reading: 'AGAINST THE GODS' -The Remarkable Story of Risk -Peter L. Bernstein 'A PAINTED HOUSE' -John Grisham 'THE APPEAL' -John Grisham A Painted House was one of my favorite Grisham novels. So different from his other books. I bought Playing for Pizza hoping it will be as entertaining. I will take me some time to read it though. My books are stacking up. I am now reading Judge and Jury by James Patterson and the next book I read will be The Childrens Blizzard by David Laskin. Barb

RE: Dancing with the Stars

I'm thinking Toni Braxton has a bit of an edge, too. Cloris Leachman was born in 1926, but I'll bet she can hold her own. :B Some of the names are foreign to me...but that's okay. I still enjoy the show. Yikes, most of the names are foreign to me too. Cloris Leachman is the only real star name I know. I've heard of Toni Braxton and Susan Lucci, but I don't have a clue who they are. Never heard of the rest of the lineup. Doesn't matter, I'll still watch. Yup it's one of the few shows I find entertaining.:) I will admit it took a long time to stop being in shock when they eliminated Sabrina Bryan, the Cheetah girl and left Wayne Newton in the mix.:E

RE: Wisconson Dells

Thanks for the input Since we don't have kids, and we are not fond of touristy things, we may pass on the Dells and find another place to visit... I'm sure there are many beautiful places in Wi to visit and enjoy. Thanks again.. Barb

Wisconson Dells

We've been on the road for six months now. We left So.Calif. in Feb. It's taken us 6 months to get as far as Bemidji, Minn.:) Many places we've stayed and things we've done and seen, are the result of recommendations of fellow travelers. :) We are moving towards visiting Va. in the fall, but still want to explore a little more of Minn and then go on to Wisconsin. Can anyone recommend a campground in the area of The Wisconsin Dells? Also any suggestions on things to do and see while visiting there would be appreciated. Thanks. Barb

RE: Saw a deer get hit by car today

How awful for you daughter to witness such a thing. Being an animal lover I hate seeing dead animals on the side of the road. I always hope the person involved was not injured. We just spent a month in an area where I have never seen so many deer, every single day.... Mostly alive, but too many of them were dead... Late in the afternoon every single day, we would see dozens of them eating and walking right along side of the road near the campground.. Sometimes big herds of them were only yards away from the road... With in a week we saw two tiny fawn laying dead, just outside of our campground in Custer.:( Breaks my heart. We always drive very slowly on these kinds roads, but too many locals seemed to drive very fast. They must get used to killing the wildlife. I have to wonder how much they care for their vehicles. My guess? by the speed they drive on the gravel and dirt roads, they really don't give a hoot about their cars and trucks.:R Barb

RE: I'll never learn my lesson

Maybe if you read what the OP wrote you will see how obvious it was that it was purchased there. I go back to the store to return the jack but I don't have my receipt. BUT the stores glued on name and price tag are still on the box. Since when does a tag on a box mean that the item was actually purchased? Without a receipt the store owner has no way of knowing if the item was stolen or not. Not saying you stole the item Frank, just saying there are LOTS of people in this world who steal from stores and later return them to the store for cash. It's not the store's fault that they have to implement strict return policies. It's your fellow human beings that have caused that to happen.oh come on, it would be pretty difficult to steal a jack from a mom and pop store. Sometimes you just have to be realistic if you want to stay in business. I have been in business a long time because I am realistic, stuff happens. You work with customers when appropriate it is not just good will, it makes ME feel better to rise above any feeling I have of distrust and accusations of these customers. Some things can't be explained away to a equitable resolution. As a store owner, I would look at the product being exchanged or returned, see if I sold it, see if realistically it could have been shoplifted, then act accordingly. But that is me and that is one of the reasons I am successful When we had our Hallmark store, we did have shoplifters and a couple of "strange return tries". A man walked into the shop one day, picked up a large $40 stuffed animal and brought it up to the counter and asked for a refund.:E He had no receipt of coarse but we also knew that tiger was sitting on the shelf 2 minutes ago. He did not get his "refund", based on our knowledge and common sense. However we had a friendly return policy and never once had some one stomp out angry because we had some stiff, stupid rules. Bottom line is, people lose receipts period. Sometimes a judgement needs to be based on a individual custormers return. Like Julies example of a bad return, we've had a few try to return something used or something we didn't even sell. Sometimes we had to say "no return", sorry...

RE: When did this happen? USPS charge?

Barb, I think that was a mistake by the clerk. I send books, magazines, cassettes, videos, etc. as "Media Rate." It used to be called "Printed Matter." And it's definitely the cheapest way to go. And if this is illegal, I prefer nobody from the P.O. chime in and tell me so. :B Since I'm not from the government, I hope it's OK for me to clarify this situation. Media Mail is indeed the cheapest way to send many things, including books, videos, etc. But magazines cannot be sent via Media Mail. Many PO staff will tell you that it's because of the advertising, but actually it's because of their status as periodicals. Even magazines with no advertising (e.g., Horizons or Highlights for kids) can't be sent via Media Mail. The USPS regulations for Media Mail include a specific list of allowable items; if it's not on that list, it can't be shipped via Media Mail. You can use First Class Mail for items up to 13 ounces. After that, your choices are Parcel Post or Priority Mail. Just to keep things interesting, in May 2007 the USPS set up different rates for the 3 sub-categories of First Class Mail: letters, flats, and parcels. Geez media mail, what's that?:?:h All I wanted to do was send a book and some pamphlets to my sons.:?

RE: I'll never learn my lesson

I have only seen through Franks eyes, I'll hold my vote until I can see through the clerks eyes. How can you vote only knowing one side.:h Now Kenny, isn't that how most of us here see things? Through the eyes of fellow rv.net members? I posted my thoughts based on what Frank said and how I would feel as a customer. A couple of other posts were based on how they did business. We just handled our business different is all.:) Barb

RE: When did this happen? USPS charge?

The problems we've had with the postal service this year leads me to believe this woman made a mistake. We asked to NOT have our mail forwarded after we got back from being on the road. It took 2 months and me going to the postmaster before we could get them to stop! The clerk kept telling me they weren't forwarding our mail even though I had evidence. I mentioned our insurance info didn't come....she said that was because they "return to sender" those types of mailings. I asked "why are you returning my mail if you're not forwarding"...she said "we always "return to sender" on certain mailings rather than forwarding them. I asked again -- why are you forwarding my mail...and she said she wasn't............are you confused??? Well, now you know what I'm talking about. GEESH Gosh Dee, kinda sounds like the Calif DMV where nothing makes sense. :? :B

RE: When did this happen? USPS charge?

I don't think it was a mistake I think it was a rip off attempt by the people at the crazy horse monument . Please read my post again. The Crazy Horse Monument has to do with the price of postage in Sioux Falls or any where else?

RE: When did this happen? USPS charge?

Barbara, I thought about it after I left the post office and cooled off.. I think your right. She certainly changed the mailing price fast. I still thought it odd that she even asked me what was in the envelopes. Never had a postal worker ask what was in an envelope before. Actually I've not been in a post office for several months, and didn't miss it at all. :W

RE: I'll never learn my lesson

You know folks, people do lose receipts. It happens. A little common sense used by a store owner would be nice. Is it worth losing a customers business, over a $20 store credit??? If the item is still shrink wrapped and has the price and store name on it, why in the world would you lose a customers business over this?? I have returned something at Penny',without a receipt and received store credit, which I was happy with. I also returned an item more than once to Home Depot without a receipt for store credit. That's GOOD business imo. Maybe that's the reason my dh run a successful tool business for nearly 40 years. He didn't make up stupid rules.:) Frank, I don't blame you, I wouldn't be going back either. Barb
